NEWS

2-24

I hope everyone is recovering from NFL District last week. I wanted to tell everyone that it has been a pleasure serving as your district chair. I could not have done ANYTHING without the help of Melissa Witt and Julie Schniers, I’m sure that their email inbox looks like mine...littered with emails from each other. I also want to thank, again, everyone that worked the tournament with special thanks to Ann Shoffner, Cindy Wiebush and Jennifer Adams.

Now, on to the news and notes: If for any reason a qualifier can not attend nationals, please inform me, the NFL and the alternate as soon as possible. Please give them an opportunity to make travel arrangements. We all need to start brainstorming about where the Tall Cotton District is going. I heard a lot of people say how expensive travel is getting and others who are saying that we need to establish a more permanent rotation. I would love to hear any thoughts on this. Judges for nationals: CX – Max Thompson – Rising Star LD – Jennifer Adams – Big Spring PF – Mellessa Denny – Amarillo OO – Nathan Counsel – Hereford IX – Clint Adams – Big Spring DX – Lacy Venhaus – Randall DI – Danny Stottlemyre – Seminole HI – Julie Schniers – Central Duo – Michael Trook – Lubbock Congress – Melissa Witt – Coronado 4. Qualifiers – Check out the attachment for the qualifiers (and if you can’t open the attachment, please shoot me an email and I’ll figure out some other way to get them to you. 5. District Committee ballots should be going out soon, please vote!

2-15-11

OK, right now we will have two qualifiers in all events except DX where we will have 3 qualifiers. But here is something you should consider: We have had outstanding turn out this year so – If you have an open spot and you feel compelled to do so – one more entry in FX and LD would allow our district to have 3 people qualify in those events. In Congress, if we had two more entries we could send three.

Please ask your students who might be interested in PO-ing at District. We will ask this information again at registration.

We are also working to finalize the judge list. Schools will have one blanket strike. This will probably have to be done at registration since we are still having judge forms come in.

One last thing, It has been a real pleasure working for you all this year. We have some awesome students and coaches here and it makes me proud to say that I am a member of the Tall Cotton District.

I also would love for yall to drop Melissa Witt and Julie Schniers a line and tell them that you appreciate the job that they have done this year.

I’m excited to see you all this Thursday!

12-13-10

It was awesome seeing most of you at the Lubbock Swing. Its been a while since I've reported anything here.

I received legislation from the following schools: Amarillo, Coronado, Frenship, San Angelo, Tascosa, Lee, Big Spring, Hereford, & Caprock.

If you sent me legislation and your schools name is not on the list, please try to re-send by the end of the day today (12-13-10) so I can get them printed, copied, and out to the people who are going to rank the legislation.

Some reminders: Remember that the district tournament is on the 17-19th of February followed by NFL Congress on the 21st in Frenship.

I have heard from past district chairs that finding judges is the hardest part of hosting the district tournament. So, if you have any suggestions for judges please send them to me, Melissa Witt, or Julie Schniers. They should be at least 2 years out of competing in high school and we would like a variety of people from all over West Texas and not concentrated from one area or the other.

Please start nominating your students for the district student of the year award. You can find the details at this web page: http://www.nflonline.org/DistrictInformation/StudentoftheYear

Please go online and vote each month for the next months Public Forum topic. This is a great way for us to actually influence what our students are debating.

Have a Merry Christmas and a happy holidays.

10-26-10

Five pieces of original Legislation are due on the 10th of December. Please look at the NFL website for information on formatting your legislation.

I would prefer it sent electronically, or you can bring hard copies to me at the Lubbock swing. Congressional packets will be emailed to schools on the 17th of January. Congress will be held the 21st of February. More information on registration and fees to follow as we get closer to the date.

Please encourage member schools in your area to keep up with their NFL Points. The NFL is now automatically moving chapters to affiliates and vice versa based on the number of seals earned. It is good for the entire district for us to not fall into Red Status. Also, if you know of a school in the area that would like to join, please share the NFL website with them and encourage them to join. I don’t need to illustrate the benefits of NFL to you, but some schools are still unaware of the benefits beyond the District and National tournaments. Currently, the Tall Cotton District is ranked 95th out of 107 districts.

10-13-10

In case you haven’t looked at the latest edition of the Rostrum, they have a list of the Academic All Americans from Texas for last year on page 30.

I am proud to say that of the 19 students that are on the list from Texas, 5 of those students were from the Tall Cotton District! That is awesome!

Students on the list were: Kyler Nicole Kelly – Amarillo High Danielle Freeman – Big Spring Garret Jones & Ryan Wallace – Seminole Nirav Patel – Snyder

If you have a student that qualifies, please submit them to the NFL!

9-29-10

The Date has been set! Mark your calendars for Feb. 17-19 for the District Tournament and Feb. 21 for Congress. If you have a conflict with either of these dates, please contact a member of the district committee ASAP!

9-22-10

It is a pleasure to welcome Rankin and Wichita Falls Rider as members of the Tall Cotton NFL District.

9-14-10 News from Melissa Witt

We are searching for a place to host the NFL District meet in Lubbock. I'm fairly certain that Amy is planning to offer to host Congress on President's Day, February 21, 2010. When I spoke to her last, that was the date she was looking at, as her district is out of school that day, and he building will be open.

We are checking with local churches for space friday morning (or the whole weekend if we find something workable). Coronado has some available dates, but no open Fridays. Lubbock High cannot host, as Mr. Trook would not be available due to spring softball obligations. We will update you when we find some information regarding venues, availability and (hopefully zero) fees. :o)

Melissa Locke Witt

9-13-10 As of right now we are in a holding pattern until the TFA sets a date for the State Tournament. But it is my preference that we hold district a bit earlier like we did last year. If you are on Facebook and you have not joined the Tall Cotton Facebook page, I encourage you and any former or current members of the Tall Cotton District to join. Please search it out.
