An effort is made in THE ART OF SPEECH AND DRAMA to reduce the principles of speaking to a system, and to present this system to students and teachers in a detailed controlled manner. I believe that more of our young ladies and men would be interested in performing Oratory or Interpretation if they could have in their hands a book which would show them how. Many in the field of Speech and Debate may have lost track of how to get a student to learn a piece, recite it and be expressive. Hence there has been increasing monotony, indifference, and, too often, a feeling of failure.
The System referred to is detailed but not complicated. With such models in position and gesture, and illustrations of the principles of vocalization, the students can prepare themselves to speak their chosen selection with entertaining power, and correct any faults they may have in tone, gesture, or position. One thing the students must do, however they must commit to memory the words they would recite, or have the meaning clearly defined in their own minds if the selection is to be read with believable expression. No amount of knowledge of principles will compensate for this omission. The students can do this; and if they do, then all their energy can be directed towards emotional emphasis.
The nuts and bolts of this speech system are divided into four sections -
Book One covers the essentials of breathing properly, stress on sounds, pausing, tone, stage whispering, consonant and vowel sounds, voice qualities, alliterations and other vocal tools to prepare for stage presentation.
Book Two introduces character studies through choice selections from classic and contemporary literature. Emotional development in speaking is emphasized, from joy and jubilation to despair and sorrow. This extensive variety of emotions offers a wide range of feelings and moods until the reader is prepared for the most rigorous dramatic impression.
Book Three presents an anthology of interesting, readable literature that can be understood on many levels. Several can be used for competitive speaking. Authors include Shakespeare, Longfellow, Marvel, Moliere, Tennyson, Whittier, Bronte, and others.
Book Four covers gestures and movement. Multiple figures serve as an example for appropriate body movement, foot placement and hand communication. This section is great for teaching and learning through figurative illustrations.
Hoping young people will take heart in this area of speech and prepare themselves for the clear and perfect expression of their thoughts and the power of our language, I submit this guide, THE ART OF SPEECH AND DRAMA THROUGH LITERATURE, to their use.
