The District Debate Tournament will be held at Ben Davis January 19th and 20th...A Friday Night and Saturday. This tournament will run in conjunction with the Hoosier Crossroads Tournament. This will allow us to share judges in an effort to run an effective and successful tournament. The Heartland will use three judges in every round using the “Two downs and out” set-up found in the Tournament Manual.
Lincoln/Douglas, Policy (Team) Debate and Public Forum are the events offered at the District Debate Tournament. I urge you to consider trying these events if you haven’t yet. It is indeed a pleasure judging students who are well informed and passionate about their cases.
The District Congress Tournament will be held Saturday February 24th. There will also be a regular speech tournament going on at the same time at the site. Please plan to enter your team at the speech tournament and enter students in District Congress as well. We hope to have two or three houses and a senate. In order to do so, we will need at least 8 schools participating in the senate.
We need your students to submit bills or resolutions. I need them by Saturday, January 13th. This will give me enough time to circulate the bills for judging and to allow all competitors time to research. If we do not receive enough, we will supplement with the state bills.
The District Solo Tournament will be held at Carmel High School on Saturday, March 17th. This tournament qualifies students in . . . Original Oratory, International Extemp, Domestic Extemp, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation and Duo (memorized) Interpretation.
Again, this year the district committee is allowing students to double at the district level. Remember that Debate and Solos should be considered as one large qualifying tournament. Entering Congress allows your student to "triple" enter. So, here are some limitations on doubling.
1. Students in Debate Events (Public Forum, Policy and Lincoln/Douglas) may not double in any other Debate Event. 2. Students in Team Events (Duo, Public Forum and Policy)may not double in any other Team Event. 3. Students entered in one extemp may not double in the other extemp. 4. A letter of intent, signed by the doubled student, parent, coach and principal must accompany the teams pre-registration to any of the three tournaments where the student would be entered in his/her second district event.
At present we have around $1200.00 in our account. Our largest expense is for Debate Judges. With this much in our account the Committee chose to only charge $5 per entry. Remember, the national office is now calling each of the team events as one entry. We will continue to allow students considered as “warm bodies” to enter at no charge.
If you will, please reply with any questions. More Information will follow as each tournament nears.
Cordially,
Gregg Reed
