Bay Area Urban Debate League Executive Director Position Available

The Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL) is conducting a national search for a full-time Executive Director to lead the organization through its next phase of growth. The Executive Director position offers unusually rich opportunities to improve the lives of hundreds, and potentially thousands, of high school students. The Executive Director role offers a unique platform for professional leadership development in the non-profit field, and is an ideal position for an energetic and experienced individual ready to take on the challenge of building a youth-serving organization early in its life and with great future potential. The position can be located in Oakland or San Francisco, California.

The Board has created a committee to lead the search for this important position. Prospective candidates should provide their resume and brief cover letter to Dan Plants, Vice Chairman of the BAUDL, at jdplants@baudl.org no later than July 23, 2010. The Search Committee will then contact candidates to schedule interviews with those it feels might be a good fit with the organization's needs.

Collegiate School on the Upper West Side of Manhattan Seeks Debate Coach

The position of Director of Debate at Collegiate is a part-time position whose hours will vary during the year according to the tournament schedule. During some parts of the year when a tournament occurs every weekend, the work hours may include weekends from Friday afternoon through Saturday night. During the spring, especially, the work hours are more likely to be lighter, and the focus shifts from preparing debaters for tournaments to organizing demonstration debates for Middle and Upper Schoolers as part of an educational process introducing potential future debaters to this activity.

The key parts of the position are:
  • Supervision of debaters during overnight tournaments. The principal national tournaments where Collegiate has competed in the past are Harvard, Emory, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, and the state and national tournaments such as TOC. It is the coach's responsibility to determine what tournaments are appropriate for what debaters.
  • Supervision of debaters during day tournaments.
  • Preparation of debaters, including review of cases, work on researching arguments, supervising practice debates, and providing feedback. Most of this work will take place before or after school hours.
  • Organizing and planning for tournament competition, including registration, travel arrangements, communicating with debaters and parents, and finding judges.
  • Meeting with the appropriate person in the Business Office to ensure good communication about budget and means of payment for registration fees, travel costs, and hotel charges.
  • Recruitment of younger debaters—principally 8th-10th graders.
  • Nurturing the older debaters—both the nationally competitive and the locally competitive.

The Bronx High School of Science Seeks Policy Debate Director, Assistant Coaches

The successful applicant would also accompany the policy debate squad to several national, regional, and local tournaments throughout the course of the year. This year, on the national level, Bronx Science policy debaters won the National Debate Coaches Association Coaches Association, the Harvard University Round Robin, the Blake School's John Edie Holiday Tournament, and the Georgetown Day School Invitational. Bronx Science also debated the final round of the Harvard National Invitational and the semifinal round of the Greenhill Fall Classic. Four separate teams received bids to the TOC. More locally, Bronx Science debaters -- younger and olders -- won titles at Byram Hills High School, Ridge High School, Yale University, and the state tournament. Our novices had a phenomenal season and are ready to join our rising and juniors and sophomores by becoming leading debaters on the squad.

The Bronx High School of Science is a specialized public high school in New York City. As such, debate receives no direct funding from the school system. Fortunately, our program has an incredibly supportive alumni base and a robust annual fundraising drive. The program also enjoys exceptionally strong support from the school's administration, parents, and general student body.

The Director of Policy Debate will work in tandem with the Director of Forensics, Jon Cruz, at a program with a rich history of excellence in debate. The director of policy debate will be responsible for administrative matters within the squad (assignments, for example) but not for administrative matters regarding the logistics of attending tournaments.

More recent graduates may apply; Bronx Science has a strong recent history of encouraging and training younger coaches. The Director of Forensics works closely with all squads -- and squad directors -- of the program.

As an institution in a public school system that currently is undergoing a hiring freeze for new faculty, a teaching job is unfortunately unavailable. Our program has a long history of excellent, dedicated "part-time" directors leading our individual squads to success.

Salary and time expectations are negotiable. Interested applicants should send a resume and/or questions to Jon Cruz (joncruz1138@gmail.com or cruz1@bxscience.edu) immediately.

The program is also seeking assistant coaches. Again, recent graduates may apply, and pay and time expectations are negotiable.
